Tomatoes and Teamwork

I'm having one of those days that i treasure, tucking it away in the corner of my heart for future remembrance. The main reason is that my man is home for the day, and that's very unusual for a Tuesday. He took the day off to help can tomatoes and salsa and i'm loving every second of it.

We started the day with a coffee latte that he made and we sat at the table in peace and quiet, sipping and talking. Ahhh, what a start. We then headed to the local organic CSA farm for some tomatoes and also bought 11 pastured freshly butchered chickens. I'm really excited about finding this farm as they're willing to sell any extra vegetables for a discount price. I paid the same for organic local tomatoes as i would've for non-organic and they threw some fresh garlic and cherry tomatoes in for free. The owner, an older guy, thought the kids would enjoy the cherry tomatoes and they did. So did Marlin and i.........Oh, he also had some leftover sweet corn that wasn't good enough to put into the CSA boxes so he left us have them for $1.50 a dozen. We picked up some canning lids and a few more jars and headed home. Quite a few of the tomatoes weren't ready so they went on the picnic table for later this week and i'll make homemade pizza sauce with them. The rest we made into salsa and also canned some chunky tomatoes.

There's something about working together as a family that can't be beat. In today's world of hurry and scurry, and everyone going their separate ways, we lose the heartbeat of what a family is about. In the old days, the wife would help the husband if he needed it and in return he helped her out. Of course there would be about a dozen kids underfoot and a dog or two, but they were a family, working together to make the everything run smoothly. I realize those days are long gone and we'll never get the "old" days back, but we can still be a family, a team, even in 2009. And if men had any idea what helping their wives out in the kitchen did for them, they'd be all too happy to help out. And more of us would have 12 kids. ;)
